"How much does a shipping container cost?" is the question we hear most. There is no single price, because two containers that look alike can be in very different condition, and delivery from Maardu to Tartu costs something else than delivery to central Tallinn. This article explains what the price of a shipping container depends on and how to get an exact quote.
1. Size
Size has the biggest effect on price. A 10ft container is the smallest, a 40ft or 45ft the largest. A 40ft container is twice as long as a 20ft one, but that does not always mean twice the price - so compare the price per cubic metre. For measurements, see our guide to shipping container dimensions.
2. Condition: new, CW or WWT
- New (one-trip) containers have made a single trip and cost the most. They suit container homes, offices and long-term use.
- Used CW (cargo worthy) containers can still ship cargo and have a valid CSC plate. They sit in the middle.
- Used WWT (wind & water tight) containers keep out wind and water but may no longer be fit for shipping. They are the cheapest and ideal for storage.
If you only need storage, there is no point paying for a new container. Read more about the grades in used container grades.
3. Height and width: high cube and pallet wide
A high cube container is about 30 cm taller and a pallet wide container is wider than standard. These versions usually cost a little more but give more space. For a container home or office, high cube is almost always the right choice.
4. Colour and age
The year of manufacture and the look of a used container also affect its price. If the container will be on display, an evenly painted or new container may be worth it. Read about colours in shipping container colours.
5. Quantity
If you need several containers, they can often travel in one delivery and the price per container goes down. For larger orders, our 100+ terminal contracts also help us find suitable containers faster.
6. Transport and placement
The delivery price depends on distance, container size and how easy the site is to reach. A small crane truck brings 10ft and 20ft containers, a large crane truck or a side loader brings 40ft and 45ft. If the site is narrow or under trees or power lines, different equipment may be needed. That is why we always ask for the delivery address, and if possible a photo of the site, when we prepare a quote.
7. The market
Shipping container prices also follow the world market: when shipping lines need more containers, prices rise in Estonia too. That is why we do not publish a fixed price list and always send an up-to-date quote.
Extra costs to plan for
- A base - the container needs level, firm ground, such as concrete blocks or crushed stone. See container foundation and delivery.
- Locking - the doors take a padlock; a container padlock and other accessories are on our spare parts and accessories page.
- Conversion - windows, extra doors, insulation, wiring or shelving. We do this in our container building projects.
How to save money
- Match the condition to the use: a WWT container is enough for storage.
- Check Containers in stock - real containers, many with a price.
- Order several containers at once so they share the transport.
- If you need a container for a few months only, consider shipping container rental.
Beware of deals that look too cheap
Some online ads offer containers far below the usual price. Often these are scams: you pay in advance and no container arrives. Always check the seller, the company details and, if possible, the container itself. Read more in how to avoid container scams.
